Welcome to a site dedicated to the beautiful Puerto Rican parrot. My name is Diego Duchateau and the Puerto Rican Parrot Initiative was born from pandemic-related boredom and frustration. As someone who has always been interested in conservation and community service, I was looking for a project to focus my energy and interests. The Puerto Rican parrot's story is frightening yet uplifting, given that it is a critically endangered bird on its way to recovery. In 1973, there were only 12 left on the island and now there are 400 in captivity and 200 in the wild! The efforts of local sanctuaries have made an incredible difference in the survival of this species. I read up on the parrot and, fascinated by its history, searched for ways to contribute. The birds are a little cranky around strangers so visitors are not allowed at the sanctuaries. Therefore, I had to get creative on ways to help, specifically on how to raise funds. I am neither an artist nor an entrepreneur, but this little parrot turned me into both!
